How Bad Are Spider Mites?
If you have a plant that is suffering from spider mites, there are some simple ways to get rid of them. But before you do anything, make sure to isolate the plant from other plants. This is to prevent the pests from spreading from one plant to another.
The best way to identify and eliminate spider mites is to examine the underside of the leaves. You can do this by using a magnifying glass. Look for fine webbing and silk-like threads that are visible at the branch intersections and leaf joints.
Spider mites are very small, weighing less than a grain of sugar. They live in dry conditions and produce webs on the underside of the leaves. During hot weather, spider mite populations grow rapidly. However, cool and wet weather slows their population growth.
You can also control the number of spider mites by misting your houseplants. This is especially helpful if you keep them outside. If you do not have a misting system, you can spray your plants with water.
Another option is to use a chemical treatment. There are many organic and synthetic products available. The key is to choose one that will kill the spider mites and not harm birds or other beneficial insects.
When choosing a product, consider the cost, toxicity and re-entry interval. You can also send samples to your local Cooperative Extension Service to confirm that you are buying a product that actually kills the pests.
