Can You Use Neosporin on Spider Bites?
Neosporin is an over-the-counter topical antibiotic used to treat a variety of skin conditions. However, the product has not been proven to help change the course of a spider bite.
A serious spider bite may require immediate medical attention. It can cause severe pain and swelling. A bullseye-shaped ring around the site of the bite resembles a halo, and the symptoms can also include a serious reaction in the stomach.
The venom that a spider injects into its victim can cause a painful, itchy reaction. It also breaks down the skin and creates a hard black crust. It can also result in blisters.
Itching and swelling can be reduced by using an antihistamine and a cool compress. Analgesics like ibuprofen can also provide relief.
If the venom from a spider bite does not heal in a day or two, the patient should see a doctor. If the wound looks infected, the provider may give a tetanus shot.
For mild spider bites, the patient can apply a cold washcloth to the affected area. In addition, the affected area should be cleaned with soap and water.
For more serious spider bites, the patient should visit a doctor or go to the emergency room. In the latter case, the physician will remove the spider’s venom and clean the wound.
The physician may also prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. A few varieties of spiders can be dangerous, including the black widow, which can kill.
