Are You Allergic to Spiders?
Spiders are insects that are classified under the order Araneae. They are small, eight-legged, multi-eyed arthropods. Though they are generally harmless, there are some spiders that are extremely dangerous, including the black widow. If you are allergic to a spider, call triple zero and seek emergency treatment immediately.
Some types of insect bites can cause itching, swelling, and redness. These reactions are often not severe, but if they become intense, or if you have difficulty breathing, get medical attention right away.
The most serious type of spider bite is the brown recluse, which causes anaphylactic shock. This spider is also known to carry a number of diseases, such as malaria.
However, most insect bites are minor and non-life threatening. Most bites require minimal treatment, and most symptoms resolve within a day or two.
In some cases, spider mites can trigger an allergic reaction. There is a growing concern that spider mites can lead to respiratory allergies and work-related asthma.
To determine how prevalent spider mite sensitivity is, researchers looked at studies that reported prevalence of sensitivity to spider mites. Studies were selected from full journal articles and controlled clinical trials. Additionally, some were excluded, such as books and conference proceedings.
Researchers found that the overall global prevalence of sensitivity to spider mites was 22.9% (95% CI 19-26.8%). The average prevalence of monosensitization was 7% (95% CI 5-9%).
Overall, the sensitivity of individuals to spider mites was high, with heterogeneity. Studies reported a wide range of sensitivity rates, from 4.3% to 90.2%. Agricultural workers dealing with fruit trees are at risk for developing sensitivity to T. citri.
