Why Do Rats Chew Wires?

Rats and mice chew wires as a way to move around. They may also chew them to make a small hole in the wall or in the joists. But they do not gnaw the wires that are above the joists. To prevent this problem, manufacturers are trying to create biodegradable wires. Some of them have soy coatings that rodents find attractive.

Wires are also great chewing materials for rats because they can easily access and hold them while chewing. Plus, they have a circular shape that fits into the rat’s mouth. In addition to that, modern homes are filled with hundreds of wires and cables. Rats don’t intentionally seek out wires to chew. They prefer to find places where they can find hidden things to gnaw on.

When rats chew wires, they can seriously damage electrical wires. In addition to short circuiting appliances, chewed wires can cause electrical appliances to stop working. Furthermore, chewed wires can cause sparks when electrical currents flow through them. This can also ignite nearby flammable items and dry interior walls.

If you notice chew marks on electrical wiring, you may have a rodent infestation. This can be alarming for people with pets. However, if you have no pets in the house, don’t panic. It’s normal for rats and mice to chew wires as a means to stay busy and keep their teeth sharp.
