Depending on the circumstances, you can choose to bury the dead rat at a pet cemetery or choose cremation. In either case, the body will be picked up from the veterinarian and transported to the final resting place. If you choose to bury it, you can transport it yourself, or you can buy an urn to keep it sanitized. A typical rat urn can cost anywhere from $30USD to $300USD.
Rats often die outside when they’re poisoned, but there’s no proof that this is the case. The poisons most commonly used to poison rats do not work instantly. They take a couple of days to begin killing the rat. Rats can move around the house before they’re poisoned, so there’s always a chance that a rat may die inside the home.
If you don’t want to use a live trap, you can use battery-powered ones. The battery-powered ones deliver a high-voltage shock that will not harm humans or larger animals. You can also use snap traps, which are old-fashioned but may hurt your pets or children.
