What Size Mesh to Stop Rats?
If you’re concerned with rodents and want to install a fence, you’re probably wondering what size mesh to use. Although the smallest mesh may be effective, it can also be prone to dust accumulation and freezing over. A compromise size of 1/2 x 1/2 inch hardware cloth is a reasonable choice.
The size of your mesh should be proportional to the size of the area where the mesh is needed. If the area is small, choose a smaller size. Larger screens may be ineffective because rats have very strong jaws. Stainless steel mesh can be cut by a cable cutter, while smaller sizes are better for definable areas.
Another good option for keeping rodents out is to install a stainless steel mesh barrier over the holes and gaps in your foundation. The mesh can be attached to the foundation using heavy-duty staples or screws, depending on the material of your home. The mesh should be inserted eight to 12 inches deep into the ground. It should be set at an angle that makes it difficult for rodents to dig through it.
For best results, you should choose 16 to 19-gauge mesh material. These are the most effective materials for rat prevention and control.
