What Rats Like to Do
Rats enjoy exploring the house, but only if they are supervised. They will chew on cords and wall corners if left unattended. They will also love to run around the house and cuddle with you. However, if they feel that there is a predator nearby, they may become stressed.
Rats also love to play with their cagemates. You can play a game with your rat by holding up a string and dragging it across the floor. Make sure to tug and jerk the string to keep your rat interested. You can also give it a small piece of paper to play with as a reward for good behavior.
Another activity rats enjoy is digging. Give them toys to dig around in and discover. Rats also enjoy climbing. You can install a small ladder, hammock, or small stairway for them to climb. Ensure that these items are non-toxic and do not harm the rat. If you have more than one rat, consider buying a couple of boxes or a few different items to keep them occupied.
If you have a rat that loves to chew on things, you should buy toys made specifically for chewing. These toys will last longer than normal toys and will be more resistant to the sharp teeth and powerful jaws of a rat. In addition to being useful, chew toys will be fun for your rat.
