What Do I Need For Rats?
Rats are intelligent omnivores and will eat a wide variety of foods if given the opportunity. They should be fed a mixture of fresh fruits and vegetables and small amounts of high-quality rat pellets. Pellets that have at least 16% protein are ideal. Fresh fruit and vegetables should also be available throughout the day.
Rats can be housed in a variety of enclosures. Depending on the species, they may require a large cage or several small ones. The cage should be aesthetically pleasing, safe from predators, and secure from the elements. A wire cage of approximately 90 cm squared by 60 cm in size is ideal for two or three rats. The cage should be lined with a solid floor so that rats are not able to climb out. It is best not to use aquarium-style glass cages as they will not provide the necessary ventilation. Wood shavings or sawdust are also not recommended as they may cause respiratory issues.
It is important to provide two water sources for rats. Rats can easily get bored with one water source. Make sure that the water source is always available. Ideally, there should be two water sources, one for each rat. Besides, the water bottle should be made of sturdy plastic with a metal ball or nipple so that rats cannot chew it. You should also provide water in plastic containers, as rats tend to be messy. You should also provide fresh water to the cage at all times.
