Should Rats Take Dust Baths?
Many pet rats love dust baths, but are these actually necessary? Rats have evolved to be opportunistic feeders and will feed on most things. Food sources that they enjoy include garbage, fruit, and pet waste. Some rats enjoy playing in cardboard boxes and plastic drainpipes. You should not let them run around on wheels, as they can get hurt.
While allowing your rat to take a dust bath does not necessarily make your rat smell better, it does get rid of some of its natural oils. These oils will reproduce, giving your rat a stronger smell. It also lets you monitor your rat’s health more easily. Bathing may also prevent territory conflicts when you introduce new rats into the home.
Rats often drag their tails on the floor and hold them up in the air. This makes their tails caked with debris, which can cause a foul odor. These clogged areas can also be home to bacterial growth and infections. To keep your rat’s tail clean, wipe the area with a mild soap solution. Do not pull on the tail because it can be painful for your rat.
Rats should not be bathed often, but only once a month is fine. Bathing your rat more than once a month can be harmful, especially if it is ill or elderly. In addition, bathing a rat too often will deplete its natural oils and make it too dry. If you must bath your rat regularly, try using a waterless shampoo.
