Is Rats Scared of Light?

Rats are easily startled by flashing or strobe lights. Bright light irritates their eyes. Bright light can even confuse them, especially if it changes colors. Rats are nocturnal, so bright light can make their vision unsteady. A steady indoor light does not scare them, but a flashing or red light is a definite deterrent.
Although rats are comfortable in light, they tend to avoid certain types of light, such as fluorescent lights. They also tend to run away from bright lights. Fortunately, there are companies that make light machines that are designed to deter rats from entering homes. Rats have sensitive eyes and can damage their eyes, so it is not always wise to expose rats to intense lighting.
However, if you want to keep rats indoors, you can use motion-sensor lights. These lights work by causing an unnerving burst of light, scaring them away from hiding spots. They can be installed strategically in areas where rats frequent. Once they get used to the lights, they will return to the area.
