How Much Do Rats Poop?

The amount of rat poop that is produced by a rat’s body varies according to species and age, but it can easily exceed 14 grams a day. Rats excrete a large volume of feces, and the majority of it is indigestible. Rats only digest about 10% of the food they eat, leaving the other ninety percent in their feces.

Rats generally defecate in open areas, such as in garages, behind kitchen appliances, or in attic spaces. They also defecate inside cabinet drawers and silverware drawers. The poop of a rat usually measures about a half-inch in diameter. The poop from a squirrel is smaller and lighter than that of a rat, but both species have similar amounts of feces.

Rats eat many different types of food, including meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. They can produce as many as 2,000 descendants in a year. They can travel up to 500 feet from their nests. As long as there’s adequate food, they’ll poop up to forty pellets a day.

In addition to their pungent odor, rodent droppings can carry diseases. The most commonly known among these diseases is hantavirus, which is transmitted by direct contact or secondary exposure to rodent droppings. It’s also important to remember that rodent feces can dry out into a powder that can be airborne.
