When you have rats living in your home, you need to decide how many to house. This will depend on the number of male and female rats and the number of weeks they are in their reproductive stage. Rats live in colonies, and they may consist of one to several hundred rats, depending on the type of food and water they have. These social animals have multiple living spaces and a continuous supply of food. The average nest will contain five to ten rats, though the colony can consist of hundreds.

Rats can live alone or in groups, and some species live in multiple homes. Many rats live in pairs, and if there are more than two rats in a single nest, it may mean multiple nests. However, this can cause some rats to become aggressive. If you want to avoid aggressive behavior, try to separate your rats by allowing them to spend time outside their cages.

Another way to tell whether you have multiple rats in your home is to count their droppings. If they are scarce, it is possible that you only have one rat living in the house, but if you find many of them, it is likely that there are many more. A single rat may produce up to 40 droppings per night.
