Getting a Rat As a Pet – How Many Rats Should I Get?
If you’re considering getting a rat as a pet, you’ll probably want to get two. While this will cost you more money in food and vet fees, the additional cost is minimal compared to the higher quality of life for both you and your pet. Rats are social animals, so keeping them in pairs is best.
First of all, you need a rat cage. Your rat cage should be large enough to accommodate the animals. Your rat will spend twenty-two to 23 hours in their cage per day. This means that the cage needs to be spacious and interesting to keep them interested. Ideally, your rat cage will hold three or four rats at a time.
If you are getting a rat as a pet, you should make sure to introduce them slowly. It can take up to two weeks for them to get used to each other. After this period, the rats should become friends. However, you should remember that introducing them may be stressful for your pet.
Once you know which breeds suit your home, contact a breeder to reserve a litter. You will receive a notice from the breeder when a litter is ready. You’ll get a chance to meet the future rats and pick a name for them. Be sure to bring a pen and paper to record your new pet’s details. You’ll need a place for the babies and money for vet bills and other costs.
