Choosing a Cage For Two Rats
When choosing a cage, it is important to consider the type of material. Coated metal bars are much better than non-coated ones. They have a protective coating instead of paint and won’t absorb odors as readily. Non-coated bars also tend to rust more quickly than coated bars. In addition, the bars should not be able to be bent with a thumb and an index finger. Rats can bend them with moderate pressure.
Rats need room to move around. A larger cage will encourage exercise and reduce the risk of obesity. A cage with more space for your pet rats will also make them more likely to get along. If you’re buying a cage for two adult rats, choose a model that has a floor area of at least 30″ by 18″ and is at least 24″ by 14″ high. Multi-level cages are also recommended for young rats. Older rats, however, may struggle to climb and fall in a one-story cage.
Rats are nocturnal, meaning that they are most active at night, dawn and dusk. As a result, it is important to choose a cage with horizontal bars that is also well-locked. In addition, make sure you have some wire mesh on hand and a spare small bar-spaced cage for emergencies. A temporary wire mesh cage can be a good choice until your rats get fatter.
