Can You Use Bird Mite Spray on Rats?
If you suspect that your rat has bird mites, the first thing you should do is to collect the mites. Bird mites are small, grayish insects. After feeding, they grow larger. You can collect the mites using sticky traps or a glue board. You can also use double-sided tape to stick the traps to furniture legs and walls near the bites. Although the mites may not be preserved well enough for positive identification, you can still use this method to be sure.
If you are using Ivermectin on a rat, you need to make sure that you don’t overdose. Too much of this treatment may lead to neurological problems and seizures. For this reason, you should only use it in small doses on rats weighing more than one pound. If you are using the treatment on multiple rats, you should give them separate doses.
After the treatment, you should clean the cage thoroughly. Use a 10% solution of bleach. Make the solution with 9 parts water and 1 part bleach. Afterwards, rinse off the treatment solution with water and dry the cage before you put the rat back in its cage. Another method is to use medicated powders or drops. The most common ones include ivermectin and permethrin.
In many cases, you can treat bird mites on rats using the same methods as those for rat mites. A household pesticide will work for treating nests, but it is still recommended to work with a pest management professional for an effective treatment. You may also want to consider adding hardware cloth or chicken wire to the openings.
