Can Rats Give You Diseases?

Some diseases, such as salmonellosis, can be transmitted by rat bites, fur, or waste. These illnesses can cause a high fever, flu-like symptoms, or even a skin rash. But thankfully, the majority of these illnesses are treatable with antibiotics.
Most animals, including rats, have skin that is susceptible to infection from bacteria called staphylococcus. This bacteria can cause infection in rats when it comes into contact with damaged skin or a wound. This is especially true for rats with weakened immune systems. Once infected, the bacteria can cause a bacterial infection known as an abscess, which may lead to gangrene and inflammation of the skin. Infected rats may lose weight and exhibit other symptoms, such as inflammation and scabbing.
Leptospirosis is another disease that can be transmitted by rats. It is more common in countries with subtropical or tropical climates, but is rare in England. In 2005, Australia and France reported 141 and 212 cases of leptospirosis, respectively. Infections from leptospirosis may occur after drinking water that contains rat urine. The symptoms of the disease can appear between three and 21 days after you’ve become infected.
The main risk of catching hantavirus from rats is through the infestation of rats and mice. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, and abdominal pain. A hantavirus infection can also lead to respiratory problems and death. The best way to prevent the spread of this disease is to disinfect the house thoroughly.
