When a mosquito bites, it leaves a small red bump. It also leaves behind saliva. This saliva contains histamine, which causes the skin to itch. The mosquito also injects saliva into the bloodstream. This causes the immune system to release histamine to get rid of the saliva.
Some people experience an allergic reaction to mosquitoes. This reaction is called “anaphylactic reaction”. This type of reaction can be life-threatening. If you experience anaphylactic reaction, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Some people also experience soreness, redness and swelling around their bites. You may want to scratch until it stops itching.
The pain and swelling may last for up to seven days. You can reduce the swelling and pain by applying ice on the area. You may also apply an antibiotic ointment. The antibiotic ointment can be applied three times a day until the bite heals.
If you are not able to apply ice to your bite, you can try applying a paste made with baking soda and water. This paste can be applied to your bite for 10 minutes. You may also apply hydrocortisone cream, which can also help relieve the pain and itching.
