Why Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Me?
Until recently, there was no real explanation as to why mosquitoes are attracted to certain people. Scientists have attempted to pinpoint a number of reasons, but they have not yet been able to come up with a solid answer.
One of the main factors is that some people produce chemicals that attract mosquitoes. This is particularly true for people who are pregnant. In fact, pregnant women exhale 21 percent more carbon dioxide than non-pregnant women. This may be a result of a change in their body temperature and metabolism.
Another factor that may attract mosquitoes is body odor. This odor is produced by bacteria on the skin. These bacteria are known to metabolize sweat components and release them into odorous byproducts. A recent study suggests that body odor may play a major role in mosquito attraction.
Genetics also play a role in mosquito attraction. According to scientists, certain blood types make people more attractive to mosquitoes. For example, Type O blood is twice as attractive to mosquitoes as Type A blood. Genetics can also affect the amount of sweat substances that are produced. However, the link between blood type and mosquito attraction is still unclear.
In addition to genetics, diet and activities may also play a role in mosquito attraction. For example, drinking alcohol may increase mosquito attraction. Researchers have not yet determined whether it is alcohol or other compounds that cause the increased attraction. However, drinking increases the body temperature, which may attract mosquitoes.
