Which States Have the Most Mosquitoes?

Almost every state in the US has mosquitoes. Some areas are virtually free of these biting insects while others have huge numbers. There are even some places in the US where the mosquitoes are so bad they can be harmful to humans.

Some of the best places to avoid mosquitoes are arid states like Arizona, Nevada, and Sedona. The desert areas in these states are arid, dry, and have very low wildlife populations.

Other states, such as Texas, have many species of mosquitoes. These insects are not only a nuisance, but they can spread diseases to humans as well. There are even two mosquito species that can carry a variety of diseases.

One of these mosquitoes is known to carry dog heartworm. Another is known to spread encephalitis. Another is a known carrier of avian malaria.

The United States has more than 3,500 mosquito species. Some species require little water to breed, while others thrive in warm climates. Aside from mosquitoes, some states have other pests as well.

In the US, some of the worst places to find mosquitoes are in the northern and western states. These areas can be particularly bad when snow melts. A warm climate may also kill mosquitoes by drying out their body temperature.

Other places, like Alaska, have very large mosquito populations around lakes and rivers. This can be especially bad in the summer.

Other places, like Hawaii, had a pretty good mosquito record until a few hundred years ago. These mosquitoes were brought to Hawaii by whaling ships.
