Which Mosquitoes Carry Zika?
Until recently, researchers did not know which mosquitoes carried Zika. However, it was found that the mosquitoes most commonly used to spread the virus in nature are the Aedes aegypti. These mosquitoes are found in every country in the Western Hemisphere.
These mosquitoes are also known to carry the dengue and Chikungunya viruses. They are often found in areas where there is standing water or sewage. They also live indoors. They are recognizable by white markings on their legs.
These mosquitoes have been implicated in a Zika outbreak in Brazil, which caused birth defects in infants. They can be transmitted to humans through sexual contact or blood transfusions. They may also be transmitted to other mosquitoes through the bite of an infected person.
Infection by ZIKV can result in neurological complications, including microcephaly. Because of this, it is important for pregnant women to get medical advice before they travel. They should also report any symptoms of Zika to their health care provider.
In addition to mosquitoes, the virus is also present in human saliva, breast milk, urine, blood and the fluids inside the eye. It is also possible that ZIKV is transmitted to mosquitoes that emerge from contaminated water sources.
Currently, there are no treatments for Zika. Some people who are infected with the virus do not show any symptoms. They will only feel a slight fever and joint pain. It can last for a few days or weeks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a travel warning for people traveling to parts of Mexico and Latin America. They recommend that travelers seek medical advice at least 4 to 6 weeks before their trip. The CDC will update the travel notice as needed.
