Which Blood Type Do Mosquitoes Hate?

During the summer months, mosquitoes are abundant. Some mosquitoes carry diseases, and some can sting you itchy welts. Depending on your blood type, they may be more or less attractive to you. Luckily, there are ways to make use of mosquitoes, and keep them away from you.

There are four basic blood types. These are Type A, Type B, Type O, and Type AB. The antigens in your blood will determine which type of blood you have. Blood types are hereditary, and some people will carry only one of these blood types.

While scientists are not entirely sure why some people are bitten more than others, they believe it has to do with their blood type. People with type A blood have genes that advertise their blood type, so mosquitoes may be more attracted to them. A study from the Journal of Medical Entomology surveyed mosquitoes to see if they were more attracted to certain blood types.

Blood type does not have any bearing on fat content, though. In fact, some people are naturally repellent to mosquitoes, because of the chemicals they produce. Some people secrete certain sugars, and others may release the right amounts of chemicals.

People with Type O blood have been found to have more carbon dioxide in their blood than people of other blood types. The carbon dioxide is released when people breathe, and it can be detected by mosquitoes. Some people have been found to be able to detect carbon dioxide from half a football field away.
