How Long Do Tiger Mosquitoes Live?

During the warmer summer months, tiger mosquitoes are active. However, during the colder winter months, they die off. The life cycle of the Asian tiger mosquito is quite different than that of other mosquitoes. The lifespan of an adult female mosquito varies, but in general, they live between one and three weeks.

Adult female Asian tiger mosquitoes feed on animals. They also bite humans. When they bite, they ingest two to six milliliters of blood each time. They then transmit pathogens from their blood meal to other hosts. They also transmit the Chikungunya virus, which is similar to dengue fever. These mosquitoes are also considered vectors for the spread of the West Nile virus.

The Asian tiger mosquito is an introduced species that arrived in the United States from Asia about 30 years ago. It has become a major pest in many communities. As an introduced species, it has adapted to overwintering in temperate climates in the United States. It can be found in 26 states.

The Asian tiger mosquito’s diagnostic features are its black body with white stripes down the side and its dorsal white stripe down the top of its head and thorax. Its antennae are feather-like. Its legs are also white, with white bands on each side. Its body is about half an inch long.

Its life cycle begins when the female mosquito lays eggs. These eggs are laid in artificial containers or natural habitats. They are typically laid in rain barrels, containers with water, tree holes, buckets and trash.
