Generally, mosquitoes don’t get as clear an image as humans. But scientists are beginning to understand how they “see” their hosts. This insight may help to prevent mosquito bites.
The mosquito’s visual system is comprised of hundreds of small lenses. It’s also enhanced by specialized optics. These allow the mosquito to see in several directions at once. It’s also sensitive to motion.
When a host’s carbon dioxide levels change, the mosquito’s visual system responds by sending a signal to its nervous system. It then flies closer. It can detect CO2 at up to 150 feet.
Another important signal for mosquitoes is heat. When the temperature increases, the mosquito’s metabolic rate increases as well. This increases its ability to find food.
