Do Mosquitoes Eat Fruit?

Despite their reputation as blood-suckers, mosquitoes are mainly vegetarians. They get their energy from nectar. Their diet is heavily influenced by seasonal weather and the availability of plant resources. Some species are able to store energy as larvae. The presence of plants helps mosquitoes thrive and increase their population.

Female mosquitoes are responsible for laying eggs. They need lipids and protein for the development of their eggs. They also need energy to survive. They feed on sugars found in fruits, flowers and other plants.

When it is cold, female mosquitoes start changing their feeding habits. They begin eating more sugar-rich foods to fatten up. They will also stop searching for a blood source. When they are full, they lay their last batch of eggs before they die.

Mosquitoes have long feather-like organs on their heads. They have large compound eyes. Their heads are also able to detect carbon dioxide from their breath. Some species are able to withstand freezing temperatures.

Aedes mosquitoes have been observed feeding on a variety of woodland plants. They have been found to consume Canada plum, pin cherry and Dryas integrifolia.

While a male mosquito will feed exclusively on fruit juices and nectar, a female mosquito will feed on both. This is to ensure that she has a sufficient supply of blood to develop eggs.

They will also drink blood from mammals and reptiles. Some species will even feed on humans. This is because mosquitoes are predators of spiders and other insects.
