The active ingredients in these products can cause significant health problems if your pet ingests them. Depending on the type of product you use, the symptoms of DEET toxicity can include seizures, tremors, vomiting, blepharospasm, and dyspnea.

DEET is considered safe for humans, but it can be harmful to pets. You should consult a veterinarian before using a mosquito repellent on your dog.

The CDC recommends using Picaridin, which is a safer alternative to DEET. It is effective but not as effective as DEET.

Many spot-on insecticides contain permethrin, which is a chemical that repels mosquitoes. However, it is not a licensed insecticide for use on animals. Unless you have a specific reason to use a permethrin-based product, you should avoid it on cats and other animals.

Other common active ingredients found in human insect repellents include picaridin and IR 3535. These chemicals can be effective at repelling insects, but they are not marketed for use on pets.
