Are Mosquitoes in Spain Dangerous?
WouterDespite the fact that there is no evidence that mosquitoes are dangerous, some people may question whether there are certain diseases that they can spread to humans. These are known as “exotic diseases”. These include West Nile virus, chikungunya and dengue fever. In Spain, these are called arboviral diseases.
There are three main species of mosquitoes found in Spain. One of them is the tiger mosquito. It is considered a potential carrier of dengue fever and Zika. It can be found in a number of countries, including Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Albania and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
The Asian tiger mosquito is an invasive species, which was first detected in Spain in 2004. The mosquito has been spreading throughout the Iberian peninsula in the last few years. In the past two decades, the number of outbreaks has increased significantly.
The Asian tiger mosquito can breed in as little as an ounce of water. It is known to be able to transmit both the Western equine encephalitis and LaCrosse viruses. In order to prevent the spreading of the disease, people should use mosquito nets and insect screens.
The tiger mosquito has also been detected in Belgium. It is already present in the United States and France.
Although there is no evidence that mosquitoes are a danger to humans in the United States, the tiger mosquito is thought to be a threat in some areas of the world. It can also be a carrier of chikungunya, a disease that causes fever, joint pain and nausea.
