Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Light?

Generally speaking, mosquitoes are not attracted to light. However, there are some types of mosquitoes that are attracted to certain types of lights. They are called positive phototaxis insects.

Light is used by biting insects like mosquitoes to find their prey. Insects that are attracted to light have other senses that help them to locate their prey. For example, some female mosquitoes use CO2 emissions as a cue to find their prey. Others find their prey through heat or body odor.

Mosquitoes are nocturnal, meaning that they are active during the evening and night. However, there are some species that hunt during the day. During these times, it can be dangerous to be out in the sunlight. Foraging for food during these warmer periods can lead to dehydration and even fatalities.

Fortunately, you can reduce the number of mosquitoes that come to your home by keeping the following things in mind. Try to keep the lights in your home low in UV rays. Also, don’t wear bright colors or floral prints, as these can attract the insect.

If you want to keep mosquitoes out of your yard, try using LEDs instead of traditional incandescent bulbs. These light sources are not only more efficient, but they also last longer. The LEDs are cheaper, and they emit less warmth than other light bulbs.

Another thing you can do to prevent mosquitoes from being attracted to your lights is to change the color of the light. Yellow is a good color to choose because it emits less ultraviolet light. But be sure to avoid blacklight, as it is naturally visible to mosquitoes.
