Will Head Lice Shampoo Kill Fleas?
The first step to get rid of fleas from your hair is to use a head lice shampoo. These insects can cause intense itching on the scalp and hair. They are most active at night, when their nits (eggs) are attached to hair shafts. The presence of these insects can also lead to an allergic reaction – a red rash. If the infestation is severe, the skin may thicken and become darker.
There are several different types of lice shampoos on the market. Many of these products can kill the fleas and eggs and kill the lice that live on your hair. They are effective against all different types of fleas and head lice, and they also help restore hair if it is damaged. Some of these products are over-the-counter, while others are available only on prescription.
A complete head lice treatment regimen usually involves two treatments a week apart. The first treatment kills the crawlers and the second treatment kills any lice that hatch from eggs during the intervening week. This is not a simple procedure and requires you to apply the shampoo only to the scalp and hair.
When selecting a shampoo, look for one that contains pyrethrins or organophosphates. Then, rinse the shampoo thoroughly and completely. The chemicals should kill the fleas in thirty minutes or less.
