Can You Feel Head Lice?
WouterOne of the most common symptoms of head lice is an itchy scalp. The itching sensation is a response to the saliva of the lice. However, the itchiness may not appear immediately. In fact, it can take anywhere from two to six weeks before symptoms appear. In addition, itchiness may be a sign of other conditions. Head lice may also cause the scalp to feel like something is crawling on it.
Head lice are tiny, tan or grayish insects that live on the scalp and feed on human blood. Female head lice lay eggs about a quarter of an inch (5 millimeters) from the scalp. The eggs hatch after six to nine days, and the nymphs will then mature into adults within three to four weeks. During this time, female head lice lay six to ten eggs a day, averaging about six.
When it comes to head lice, it is important to remember that these pests spread through personal contact, sharing bedding, and wearing the same clothing. Although they are most commonly found on children, they can also be spread from person to person through family and group settings. It is also important to note that lice can spread bacterial diseases.
Head lice are difficult to see, so make sure to wear disposable gloves and check your child’s hair under bright light. You may also want to use a magnifying glass to make a thorough inspection. Part your child’s hair down to the scalp, and look for lice that are moving or eggs. If you find any, you should treat them right away.
