Are Crabs and Head Lice the Same Thing?

Crabs and head lice are two different things. While they both cause itchy bites, they are not the same. Crabs live in the pubic area of the head, but can also infest other areas like the eyelashes, beard/mustache, and armpits. They also can cause secondary bacterial infections due to their aggressive scratching. Crabs may also live in clothing, furniture, and other items. If you suspect your partner has this infestation, you will need to inform your partner and wash all their clothes, bedding, towels, and any other items that may have been in contact with the affected area.

Crabs and head lice are parasitic bugs that can affect both children and adults. The most common areas where they live are the pubic area and chest and armpit hair. Crabs, however, rarely live on the scalp. Because they are so small, they are difficult to detect, but when they live on the human body, they can be extremely irritating.

The first sign of head lice is itching and scratching. If you have crab lice, the itching will occur on the genitals and is not as severe as head lice. Crab lice and head lice are small, yellow or white, and their eggs are inconspicuous. Crab lice and head lice can cause itching, scratching, and nits. Symptoms can take a couple of weeks before you notice them.
