Flies pollinate more than 100 cultivated crops, including strawberries, bell peppers, and carrots. They are even useful in fishing, where they act as bait. They also act as parasites and serve as food for other insects. In addition to pollinating plants, flies also play important roles in the food chain.
Flies that lay eggs in damp soil are known as cluster flies. Other species such as the fruit fly and the drain fly feed on decaying organic matter. These insects breed in moist soil close to bodies of water. Some species also breed in forests and woodlands. They are most active on windless, sunny days.
