Where Do Flies Come From in the House?

Flies typically breed outside, but they can also be found inside. If you’ve noticed flies around your home, it’s likely that the bugs got in through a small opening. Once inside, they will search for food and a place to lay eggs. You can find them in a variety of places around the house, but they tend to stay near dirty areas like your kitchen garbage bin or dirty drains. Flies will spend two to four weeks in your house before finding another way out.

If you live near a farm or other agricultural area, you may find a higher fly population in your home. Flies do not necessarily mean that your house is dirty, though. Dirty dishes and garbage bins can attract flies, as can animal waste and pet food bowls.

Flies can also be found in drains. Drain flies are most common in bathrooms, where they breed and feed on organic matter. Basements are also ideal fly habitats. You can detect an indoor fly infestation by the presence of adult flies. If the numbers of adult flies in your house are increasing, you have a growing infestation.

Fly infestations are common in many homes, and you should be aware of their sources. Often, flies enter the house through cracks in the foundations or gaps around pipes. They can even enter your home through open doors and windows.
