How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies Without Fruit
One of the first things that you should do if you’re trying to get rid of fruit flies is to keep your kitchen clean. Avoid leaving open fruit and vegetables on your counter, and make sure that you’re putting your garbage outside or in a closed container with a lid. Also, be sure to keep your refrigerator and garbage disposal clean by putting ice cubes in the disposal and then rinsing it out with hot water. Make sure to wipe down countertops regularly and keep the kitchen as clean as possible.
If you’re having trouble keeping fruit flies away, try using a homemade fruit fly trap. You can make a trap with simple pantry staples and vinegar. This will prevent fruit flies from reproducing and will help you keep your kitchen clean. If you don’t have fruit to trap, you can also try mixing dish soap and vinegar (wine, beer, or apple cider vinegar). Fruit flies will love fermented fruit and will be drawn to the haze, where the soap bubbles will trap them.
Fruit flies prefer bananas, apples, squash, and tomatoes. Female fruit flies lay eggs on rotting fruit or moist surfaces. The eggs hatch within a day or two and the larvae feed on decaying foods. Once they reach adulthood, fruit flies live between eight to 15 days.
