How Quickly Do Flies Reproduce?
The life span of a house fly is about three weeks, but their lifespan can be extended to two months if the weather is cool. Adult flies can survive two or three days without food. A diet high in proteins will prolong their life expectancy. A female fly can lay up to 150 eggs at once. Eggs are white and about 1/25th inch long, and hatch within two to fifteen hours. The number of eggs laid depends on temperature. When the temperature is 99 degrees Fahrenheit, eggs hatch in about 7 1/2 hours. In colder weather, the eggs can take up to two days to hatch.
Once the eggs hatch, the larvae, also known as maggots, grow rapidly. Their first stage lasts for three days, but the next stage takes about eight weeks. During these stages, the fly is inactive. Once the pupae has emerged, it will develop wings and legs.
Fruit flies can produce up to 400 eggs during their lifetimes. The eggs are very tiny, and the female will lay up to 400 eggs in her life. Once a female fly lays her eggs, the larvae will hatch within the fruit. Fruit flies have very fast reproduction rates, and their rapid development is one of the reasons fruit fly infestations can be difficult to eradicate.
Flies are notorious for spreading illness. They are known to transmit diseases like cholera and dysentery to humans. They are also carriers of typhoid fever. Keeping your kitchen and premises clean and hygienic is important if you want to avoid flies.
