How Long Do Household Flies Live?
The housefly belongs to a group of insects known as flies. It is the most common species of fly found in houses. It evolved in the Middle East during the Cenozoic Era, and has since spread to other parts of the world. Depending on the species, they can live as long as three months.
The lifespan of a household fly depends on the species and the temperature of their environment. In warm, humid environments, they can survive for up to 15 days. On the other hand, in a cool, dry climate, they can live for up to two months. House flies are about an eighth to a quarter inch long and have dark stripes along their sides. They feed on organic matter, and females lay their eggs directly into it. They are commonly found in dirty water and around dirty areas. They make a characteristic buzzing sound when flying.
Once the adult flies hatch, they will last from about a week to two months. However, they may be cut short by predators. Adults of these flies may even overwinter in a house. Regardless of the age of an adult, it’s a good idea to monitor your home for any signs of infestation.
The lifespan of a household fly depends on the species. Females generally spend around two weeks in larval stages. Females are larger than males, and have red eyes. Houseflies lay up to 150 eggs in a batch. Their eggs take around eight to twenty hours to hatch. The resulting flies are called maggots. Houseflies can carry diseases.
