Female fruit flies can lay up to 500 eggs in a single month. They don’t need fruit to reproduce, but they do need to stay moist and warm to lay their eggs.

Fruit flies are attracted to fermenting fruit, and they can smell the fruit from a distance. They are also drawn to garbage and open containers. When fruit is overripe, they produce alcohol, which attracts the fruit flies. If left out, fruit flies can enter homes as adults and feed on the food inside.
