How Do Flies Bite People?
You’ve probably heard horror stories about flies biting people while they’re on a picnic, but did you know that most flies don’t actually bite people? In fact, most flies only feed on fruits and liquids, and don’t have mouth parts that enable them to suck blood. Those that bite, however, are seeking blood to feed on.
The bite itself is a painful sensation, which may be accompanied by swelling and redness. In severe cases, the bite may trigger an allergic reaction, causing pain and shortness of breath. In such cases, a doctor may recommend anti-inflammatory medications or topical corticosteroid creams. Alternatively, if the bite appears to be infected, a doctor may recommend further testing. In mild cases, you can clean the area with soap and water, and apply a cool compress. A cold compress is helpful in reducing swelling and pain.
Although flies are often considered harmless, they can be dangerous. They can cause a number of diseases. Since they feed on human waste, garbage, and animals, flies are known carriers of various bacteria and viruses. They can cause diarrhea, eye infections, and serious allergic reactions in some people.
Some species of flies bite humans. Insects like horse flies and deer flies are especially dangerous. These insects have razor-like mouthparts and can cause painful bites. They can also transmit tularemia, a bacterial infection. People with sensitive skin should avoid areas where flies are most active and wear light-colored clothing and insect repellents.
