Fruit flies are an unwanted nuisance. They can show up out of nowhere and cause a lot of stress. The first thing to do is to get rid of any sources of overripe fruit and the soil. These areas are where the fruit flies lay their eggs.
A spray of isopropyl alcohol can get rid of fruit flies and keep them from returning. This spray kills them on contact. The fruit flies will disappear as the weather cools. You can even try making your own spray using isopropyl alcohol.
One effective way to get rid of fruit flies is by using bait. The bait you choose should be placed inside a bowl. Once you place it inside, cover the bowl with plastic wrap. You can then poke holes in the plastic. If fruit flies are attracted to the bait, they will follow the gas trail.
One thing to keep in mind about fruit flies is that they are attracted to fermenting fruit. These insects thrive on high fructose substances. Female fruit flies lay eggs on the surface of decaying fruit. They can lay as many as 500 eggs per day. Once the eggs are laid, the larvae will feed on their surroundings and eventually evolve into fully-formed adult fruit flies.
