Can You Use Super Glue For Tiding Flies?
A high-quality superglue can make the job much easier, and you can buy them in a variety of strengths. Loctite makes a tying glue with a brush on applicator that’s great for multiple applications on your tying bench. The gel-like formula dries quickly and is resistant to water and moisture. It’s also cheap and easy to find.
Using a glue like CA is not the best idea, because it will spread everywhere. However, you can apply it to flies the same way as a regular head cement. However, tiers should be careful not to add too much glue because it could result in bulk on the pattern.
Another alternative is Krazy Glue. However, the bottle has a small hole and the brush bristles may get caught in the glue. In addition, the glue is not super strong and it has a fishy odor. If you must use super glue, look for one that is made of thin or medium viscosity. Thicker glue isn’t suitable for tying, and you might ruin your fly. Moreover, it could permanently damage your vise and tying table.
Head cements are thin-bodied, so that they don’t add bulk to your flies. You can apply them with fine-tipped brushes. Flexible cements, on the other hand, are relatively new in the fly-tying world, and they’re used to fix feathers. The cement can be applied to feathers, such as wing cases or spent wings, or it can be used on the wing exoskeleton of nymphs.
