Can Flies Lay Eggs in Water?
Fly eggs are laid by the female fly. Each egg can develop into a fly within days. In a few days, there can be millions of these tiny creatures. If food is plentiful, flies may even give birth to live maggots. Although the eggs and maggots are harmless, some people are concerned about their potential harmfulness.
Flies are attracted to dark, moist places, and standing water. They lay their eggs in decaying organic matter. Female flies may lay up to 500 eggs at a time. These flies feed on decaying animal wastes. If you have an infestation, chances are an animal has died somewhere in the house. You should also be aware of other types of flies, including drain flies, which lay their eggs in drain film.
Drain flies are one of the most common pests in swimming pools. The erratic flight pattern of these flies makes it easy for them to fall into the water. When they land on the surface, they roll around and eventually stand up. Then, they leap into the air by moving their four hind legs in a rowing-like motion.
Once the eggs hatch, larvae will develop and pupate in the water. These adults emerge as adults in the early spring, when the temperature rises above 37°F. The larvae spend about a week or two feeding on small plants. Then, they will hatch into flies.
