Why Fleas Only Bite Me
While fleas prefer to live on dogs and cats, they are not necessarily attracted to humans. Certain aspects of your home can attract more fleas than others, including unmowed lawns, unclean carpets, and pet bedding. Fleas may also be attracted to certain scents, such as garlic, onions, and curry. These scents can be found in foods, as well as in the by-products of your sweat.
Children are more prone to flea bites than adults. Their skin is more sensitive than adults, and they tend to have a lower immune system, so their reactions may be more severe. Children’s flea bites are painful and often cause a burning sensation that can be treated by applying anti-itch cream. The area should also be covered to prevent infection.
If you are concerned about flea bites, visit your doctor as soon as possible. The symptoms of flea bites are very similar to those of other diseases. A doctor may be able to quickly diagnose you if you have flea allergies, or prescribe medication to alleviate the pain and minimize the body’s response to these tiny parasites.
Another common scenario that causes a flea infestation in a home without pets is a new tenant moving out. When a tenant has moved out, the fleas no longer have a source of food to feed on, and they bite humans instead. This situation can be especially problematic if there is a new resident living in an apartment building.
