When Does Flea Market Close?
The annual flea market in Liberty City, Florida, has a storied history. For nearly four decades, this market has drew Hispanic and Black clientele from neighboring neighborhoods. One vendor, Yanis Carreto, grew up next door and fondly recalled his childhood visits to the market. He recalled the red-white-blue checkered floor. Now, however, the market is no more.
Flea markets were once an integral part of South Florida’s culture. They were a way for immigrants to make money, as well as a way to support their communities. Before the era of the dollar store, flea markets were the first source of cheap shopping in a new community.
Opa-locka Hialeah Flea Market opened in 1985. It’s located in the northwestern part of Miami-Dade County. The market is surrounded by warehouses. The area is far from the bustling nightlife of South Florida or the traditional shopping malls.
