What to Do When a Dog Has Fleas
A flea infestation can be difficult to diagnose and treat, but there are ways to ensure your pet stays healthy and free from fleas. First, you can keep an eye out for signs of infestation. Your dog may begin grooming himself excessively, and you may notice red, bloody or inflamed spots. If you see any of these signs, bring your pet to the vet for diagnosis. In some cases, you may also notice traces of flea dirt on your dog’s coat or bedding.
During the first few days after your dog’s flea infestation, bathe him thoroughly. This will provide initial relief and will help kill off flea eggs. In addition to bathing, you can also apply a paste made of baking soda. Make a paste by mixing equal parts of baking soda and water. Apply it to the affected area and leave it on for a couple of hours.
If you find a tick, try to remove it with a tweezer. You should rotate it counter-clockwise while pulling the tick out of the skin. If the head of the tick remains, do not panic. The body will recognize it as a foreign body and reject it over time. Once the head is removed, the tick will be unable to ‘infect’ your dog. However, if you do find a tick, you should take your pet to a veterinarian to have it removed. Remember not to kill the tick with alcohol or oil.
The best way to eliminate fleas on your dog is to keep the area clean. You should also wash your dog’s bedding in hot water. Also, a non-toxic flea spray can be purchased online or from local pet supply stores. Keeping the yard clean will prevent fleas from spreading throughout your home. It is also a good idea to patch open fences so that fleas do not enter your home.
