How High Can Fleas Fly?
WouterAlthough fleas do not have wings, they have amazing jumping capabilities. Depending on their body size, they can jump anywhere from 40 to 100 times their own height. In fact, the fastest flea can reach speeds of over 2 miles per hour. The distance fleas can cover depends on how large they are and where they live.
Fleas are a major problem for pet owners. These tiny creatures live in animals, but they also infest humans. They can jump many feet up onto a person, so they need to be taken care of immediately. Fortunately, there are ways to control fleas and keep them from becoming a nuisance.
While fleas do not have wings, they do have very strong legs, allowing them to jump high. In fact, fleas can jump as high as seven inches vertically, equivalent to a six-foot man leaping over the Eiffel Tower. However, they will not jump out of water. Therefore, a trap containing dish soap can be effective in catching fleas.
The adult flea lives only 100 days, but she can lay around 2,000 eggs during her lifetime. The eggs are laid by the female flea after she has eaten. The larvae of the flea are small and resemble microslugs. It takes them longer to mature, so they build cocoons to protect themselves and live in them until they reach adulthood.
