Fleas Hate Essential Oils
Fleas hate essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus and citronella. You can mix these oils with salt and water to use as a flea repellent. Spray them on your dog’s fur and furniture to keep fleas away. They don’t kill fleas, but they will keep them from breeding and infesting your home.
However, don’t make the mistake of putting a drop of these essential oils on your dog’s bedding. Dogs are highly sensitive to scents, and you’ll have to be very careful to avoid irritating your pet’s nose. Use a base oil such as sweet almond oil, and add other essential oils such as bay laurel or Atlas cedar.
Another great flea repellent is peppermint oil. You can add it to a fine mist spray bottle and mist your dog with it. Lemongrass oil is a good repellent as well, and you can dilute it with water and apply it to your pet’s fur.
Essential oils can be used to kill fleas on your pet, but you should be careful not to apply too much to your pet’s fur or mouth. Eucalyptus oil is particularly harmful for dogs. Essential oils aren’t safe to use on pets with gastrointestinal tract or mucous membrane issues, so be careful when using them. You should also avoid spraying your pet’s fur or letting him or her lick the surfaces treated with them.
Essential oils are the best natural flea repellents. However, they are highly concentrated and may cause irritation when not used properly. Essential oils such as tea tree oil are considered high risk and should be used with caution. If you don’t know which oil is best for your pet, read a product’s ingredients list and choose the most suitable product for your pet.
