Why Some Cockroach Can Fly
WouterCockroaches are not the most powerful fliers, but they can fly. Their wings give them a boost of speed and allow them to reach speeds of up to 3 miles per hour. Even so, they don’t fly very far. The maximum altitude that a cockroach can reach is about 10 metres. This is a remarkable feat for a creature with such a tiny body and large wings.
While many cockroaches are unable to fly, those that can do so can get away from danger by flying. In addition to escaping from predators, flying cockroaches can reach places where crawling roaches can’t reach. Moreover, they can spread dangerous bacteria. Not to mention, some people are allergic to cockroaches, and cockroaches can be dangerous in large infestations.
In order to survive in the cold, some cockroaches are equipped with wings. Their front wings are thick and similar to their body color, while the back wings are thin and transparent. A flying cockroach uses its back wings to counterbalance its body weight and glide through the air.
Among all cockroach species, the Australian cockroach is one of the most impressive fliers. Although similar to its American counterpart, it is more colorful and looks like a giant bug. Unlike the American cockroach, it is smaller than its American counterpart and does not grow much bigger than 1.45 inches.
