Why Does Killing a Cockroach Attract More Cockroaches?
If you have a problem with cockroaches, killing them may not be the best solution. This act is not only cruel to the insect, but it can also attract more. A dead cockroach emits pheromones, which attract other cockroaches. These smelly pheromones are transmitted through the air and can be detected by other roaches from a distance.
While cockroaches are not particularly picky about their food sources, they are attracted to the smell of dead cockroaches. This may cause them to congregate in an area where they can find food. Another reason that killing a cockroach can attract more is that the carcass of the insect may contain dangerous microorganisms such as Entamoeba histolyticum and Salmonella Typhimurium.
Cockroaches like moist areas and water. This is why they are attracted to yards and other wet areas. They are also attracted to decaying matter. They particularly love garbage, compost and dead insects. Moreover, they can digest many different kinds of organic materials. Some of these materials include glue, leather, nylon cloths, and toothpaste.
Cockroaches prefer moist and warm areas, including kitchens and bathrooms. They also tend to favor places with high humidity. Therefore, it is advisable to keep food dishes and pet bowls up high. Cracked shower doors and dripping faucets can also attract cockroaches.
