Why Are Cockroaches Immortal?

Despite these incredible qualities, it is still unclear why cockroaches are considered immortal. There are over four thousand species of cockroach, many of which exhibit pest-like behavior. However, scientists do believe that cockroaches can survive a nuclear blast and regenerate their limbs. It is also possible that they have the ability to repair damage on their bodies from the inside. Despite their resilience and adaptability to unsanitary environments, cockroaches are not immune to pathogens.
Cockroaches can regenerate limbs when they are in their nymphal stage. In Chinese, the word “xiao qiang” means “little mighty one.” The same could be said about American cockroaches. Scientists have discovered genes that explain this characteristic.
Aside from their incredibly complex digestive systems, cockroaches can also develop a strong immune system. They secrete antimicrobial peptides in response to bacteria and fungi that they encounter. This helps them produce their own antibiotics.
