What Can Cockroach Eat?

If you have a cockroach problem in your home, there are some things you can do to keep them from destroying your property. These critters love food, and they can even eat your pets’ food! Pet food is great for roaches, because it contains nutrients and minerals they need to survive. If you find your pet’s food in your home, make sure you clean it up promptly.

Cockroaches’ mouths are complex organs and they have a series of parts that help them eat. They have labrums that pull their food into their mouths, gizzards, and maxillae. Their labrums work together to suck up food, while the maxillae function as teeth, breaking down food.

If they don’t find food, they decrease their activities. They use their energy for survival functions, such as reproduction. They are cold-blooded, so their body functions depend on temperatures. High temperatures cause them to be more active, and cold weather sends them into hibernation. Some species can go up to a month without eating!

Aside from food, cockroaches will also consume organic matter. Their favorite foods are those that are sugary and starchy. Meats and cheese are also a favorite among these creatures. These insects are attracted to scraps of food, so make sure you don’t leave dishes in your sink overnight. Another food source is cereal. Cockroaches also chew on cardboard and paper, so don’t leave these items lying around.
