Can Cockroaches Survive Heat?
WouterIf temperatures are low enough, cockroaches can survive. The gut bacteria of the Madagascar and Dubia cockroaches is quite hardy. Even at microscopic levels, they can survive in extreme conditions. In contrast, the American cockroach can survive in temperatures as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and can grow and lay eggs there. However, a female American cockroach can only survive up to 12 months before dying.
As temperatures drop, roaches begin to adjust their activities. This adaptation allows them to find perfect hiding places. These areas include kitchen cabinets, basements, and subflooring. In addition, roaches will try to find food during cooler periods. Since they are nocturnal, it is difficult to detect them until a major infestation is established.
Another way to detect a cockroach infestation is to find its entry point. Cockroaches can enter a home through a door or window, or through a crack or hole in the roof, chimney, or attic vent. They can also enter through holes in utility lines or plumbing. If you find a hole, caulk or steel wool will help you seal it. If the hole is larger, you can also use fine wire mesh to cover it.
In general, cockroaches cannot tolerate very high temperatures. In fact, they will die if the temperature rises above a certain level. In addition to the heat-related dangers, cockroaches can’t withstand cold conditions for long. They can live in cold environments for a few hours, but they cannot handle temperature rises above 100 degrees.
